  • The auditory system can be defined as our body’s ability to process sounds and gather information from our surroundings. It isn’t simply about our ability to hear (an innate ability which can’t be taught), but our ability to listen which in turn allows us to interact with the sounds in our environment and make sense of what we hear.

  • The visual system is the ability to make sense of the world around around us using sight. It is more than just acuity. The visual system helps us determine safety, size, color, depth, etc.

  • The olfactory system is the sense of smell. This system is often tied into our limbic system, which is the emotional center of the brain. This is the reason why certain smells warm our hearts, like freshly baked apple pie. The truth is… our sense of smell is so much more than just a way to sense odors. It is a way for our brains to process information. It is so closely connected to our gustatory (taste) sense that it can actually improve or inhibit the way we taste things. It can affect you child’s eating, working memory, and ability to recall information.

  • The gustatory system is the ability to taste, determine textures and foods. It is highly interconnected to the proprioceptive system. You may hear the term oral motor sensory.
